10 Hr. Certified Recovery Peer Advocate - Family (CRPA-F)

This is the 10 Hr. Virtual (Zoom) component of the 20 hour CRPA-Family Training.

As one of three approved providers in NYS selected to deliver this much anticipated “refreshed for virtual delivery” training, RCU is pleased to offer CRPA-F training. Whether you are interested in gaining CRPA/CARC Renewal Hours OR earning your CRPA-Family Certification, this training will prepare you to support family members and primary caregivers of youth struggling with SUD and/or mental health conditions through your lived experience, advocacy skills, compassion, empathy, guidance and empowerment. Be sure to see CRPA-F Certification eligibility requirements below.*

IMPORTANT NOTES!
You must submit your Certificate of Completion for the ASAP-PWI (Peer Workforce Initiative) 10 hour, 15 module online training entitled Certified Recovery Peer Advocate-Family Online Training Program prior to this 10 hour virtual (Zoom) training! You will not be permitted into the training if we don’t receive this Certificate of Completion. This is the ONLY Certificate that will be accepted for this Prerequisite Training.

The RCU Virtual-Live CRPA-Family Training combined with the online prerequisite training is approved by ASAP-NYCB for 20 CRPA and CARC Renewal Hours OR for CRPA-Family Initial Certification Hours (you must choose one or the other).

Participants must have access to both audio and video Zoom connection and are responsible for verifying and meeting all eligibility (if applicable) and training prerequisite requirements, described below*.

The ‘Certified Recovery Peer Advocate-Family’ designation is a new specialization under the existing CRPA (Click Here for CRPA-F role competencies and role-specific ethics addendum to the ASAP-NYCB Code of Ethical Conduct.  For Certification Instructions Click Here and for Certification Application Click Here.) If eligible, it affords existing Certified Recovery Peer Advocates (CRPA’s) an additional opportunity to offer specialized family peer support within an OASAS Certified Family & Youth Treatment provider.

Facilitated by Lisa Nichols, Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC), Recovery Coach Professional Facilitator (RCPF) and NYCB Trainer Registry Member and Lori Drescher, Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC), Recovery Coach Professional Facilitator (RCPF), ASAP PWI Authorized Trainer, NYCB Trainer Registry Member and Governance Committee Member; authorized OASAS and CCAR Trainer; and, FOR-NY Designated Best Practice Trainer.

*Eligibility Requirements for CRPA-Family Certification:

Anyone can take the CRPA-Family Training (after attending the online training prerequisite!)! However, you are eligible for CRPA-Family Certification ONLY if you:

  • achieved your CRPA credential through NYCB (or have completed the 50 Hrs approved training).

  • completed the 10 hours family-specialty online training modules and email your Certificate of Completion to your trainer before training begins.

  • the 10 hours family-specialty CRPA-F training (this class!)

  • meet the CRPA-F definition of a “ Peer” - a “parent, or primary caregiver, of a youth (21 years or younger at onset of family exposure to youth’s substance use) who has participated in, or navigated, the substance use disorder services system.” Due to NYS Medicaid reimbursement requirements, this is non-negotiable.

  • Intend to work in an OASAS licensed treatment agency as a Family Peer Specialist supporting parents of children age 21 or under, affected by their child’s Substance Use Disorder.

 

CRPA-Family Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (Competencies):

Domain 1: Family Peer Support

1. Practice individualized peer support that empowers families to make informed decisions
2. Develop self-awareness and utilize lived experience effectively
3. Navigate local and regional recovery support and treatment options including diverse levels of care and Medication Assisted Treatment/Narcan
4. Encourage family involvement in recovery and treatment activities
5. Assist families to enhance their skills in promoting recovery and responding to problematic behavior
6. Connect families with individualized recovery supports, networks and resources based upon their strengths, need and goals
7. Assist families to implement recommendations from service and treatment providers
8. Collaborate effectively with community stakeholders such as clinical treatment teams, criminal/juvenile justice and social welfare professionals

Domain 2: Recovery & Addiction

9. Recognize the full continuum of substance use/addictive disorders
10. Understand the science of addiction and recovery
11. Recognize the impact of substance use/addiction upon youth and the family
12. Assist families to understand their rights and responsibilities when children are in residential care, treatment or involved in the criminal justice system
13. Recognize local and regional trends related to youth substance use/addiction and recovery
14. Encourage family members to connect with natural support in their communities
15. Promote recovery by utilizing empowering, hopeful and optimistic strategies
16. Practice recovery-oriented language and avoid the use of stigmatizing labels and terms

Domain 3: Cultural Awareness & Sensitivity

17. Recognize the importance of culture, race/ethnicity and language
18. Develop cultural awareness and knowledge of the unique cultural context, health beliefs and practices of families served
19. Utilize culturally appropriate strategies that ensure sensitivity to individualized cultural needs and traditions
20. Promote the adoption of culturally responsive practices and services
